Welcome to the MN Transportation Research Collaboration Site

The Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Minnesota Local Road Research Board welcome your ideas for research and research implementation funding. Register or log in to submit a new idea or vote on an idea to show your support. (To enter a new idea, click the "Submit New Idea" button, choose your idea's topic area, fill in the online form and click "Submit" at the bottom of the form when you are done.)

The deadline to submit research ideas for the next MnDOT research program RFP (CY2020) is May 3, 2019. Please note the LRRB already solicited ideas from its member cities and counties for this RFP and is only considering new ideas that involve joint funding with MnDOT. If you have an idea that is only for the LRRB, you can submit it now, but it will not be considered until after the deadline for the following year's program: November 1, 2019.

Live load reactions at bridge piers

Bridges constructed in the 1950s and 1960s are at an age where rehabilitation is necessary to extend the useful service life. When additional dead load is added by the project or deterioration is observed, MnDOT requires pier caps be rated using the current design code; it should be noted that the live load used in previous design codes is different than current design codes. Analysis often results in low load ratings, ...more »

Bituminous Underseal on Local Roadways

The City of Minneapolis is constructing a test section of a bituminous underseal in 2019. The section is broken into three 660-foot segments. The goal of this research is to monitor the performance of the test sections and determine the benefit, if any, gained from the application of the bituminous underseal. The appeal of a bituminous underseal is it combines a chip seal with a mill-and-overlay. Both techniques are ...more »

Community Transit Strategies

A human-centered design approach to transportation in Greater Minnesota can lead to more efficient transit solutions that utilize the existing public and private assets in rural communities. This approach can take several directions, depending upon the community's needs and assets. We propose engaging the city of Wabasha in a community transit pilot project that would give people with transportation needs access to rides ...more »

Roundabouts: Are design practices ADA compliant?

The Minnesota Council on Disability (MCD) has raised concerns about the safety of methods currently employed for crossing at Minnesota Roundabouts for pedestrians with disabilities. Representatives of the Council recently approached MnDOT to bring awareness and discuss some concerns about current design practices. Because roundabouts offer so many beneficial features to a Minnesota community, it is important that they ...more »

Pedestrian Features on Roundabouts

The accommodation of safe pedestrian movement at roundabouts needs to be studied with respect to a broad range of surrounding pedestrian facility types, contexts, and pedestrian crossing control features. Examples of pedestrian crossing control to be studied include: warning devices such as Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacon(RRFB), crosswalk configurations and locations with respect to roundabout geometry, and other pedestrian ...more »

Increased Value street and utility reconstruction projects provide to a typical residential neighborhood

Street and utility reconstruction projects provide increased value to surrounding land use. It is often difficult for property owners to understand street improvement assessments relative to the increased value. Training/education tools are needed to communicate the broad range of benefits provided on a typical street reconstruction through a residential neighborhood. State Aid Pre-Screening Meeting input: A broader ...more »

Performance of Overlays

The performance of overlays differs by location in the State of Minnesota. Pavement failures, including potholes, occur in a broad range of service life, from 10 to 20 years. Research is needed to better understand the broad range of overlay performance including contribution factors such as mix design. State Aid Pre-Screening Meeting input: Performance of overlays differs by location. In some instances, overlays ...more »

Creating snow fence demonstrations with the UMN

Recent research as part of ongoing research between MnDOT and the University of Minnesota has highlighted the need for 1) demonstrations of blowing and drifting snow and blow ice snow fence control measures to show potential landowner-adopters of snow fences how they work and 2) how they affect agricultural operations and specifically how can interruptions in agricultural operations be minimized by snow fence designs ...more »

Notifying the public of county road and city street closures in common smart phone map apps

Most counties and cities are not well set up to distribute information about highway segments that are under construction or closed with a designated detour route. Carver County created their own Construction & Closures map online application, however most counties and cities don't have the staff or resources to generate the type of GIS database/mapping to support this application. In addition, this information ideally ...more »

Asphalt Film Thickness vs a chip seal at 1 year ‐ B/C analysis

A better understanding and comparison of the benefits of higher Asphalt Film Thickness (AFT) and chip seal is needed to inform pavement maintenance techniques and to optimize cost effectiveness. The research should include a benefit-cost analysis at 1 year of service life and explore the benefits of implementing both treatments at the same time. State Aid Pre-Screening Meeting input: Benefits of higher AFT ...more »

Cost life cycle of local roads

It is often challenging for the public and policy makers to understand the maintenance cost of local streets over the service life of a roadway facility. Education/Training tools are needed to help local agency staff communicate these costs and inform budgets over the service life of a roadway facility. Mill and overlay ‐ BMP

There are a variety of mill and overlay methods and a variety of crack sealing methods used for Minnesota roadways. Understanding how well these methods peform in terms of pavement life and the minimization of reflective cracking would be beneficial to roadway agencies. Several alternative methods have been used in recent years and a review of the effectiveness of current best practices would help inform cities and ...more »

Effectiveness of fog seal on chip sealed low volume roads

Local units of government have experience using a fog seal over chip sealed pavement. This practice is often used on low volume roads with residential driveways. Residents often complain about the impact of the fog seal on driveways.
