Enhancing transportation system resiliency through V2I/V2V technology

Transportation network plays an important role in maintaining the functionality of the city. After a disaster happens, the traffic pattern can be dramatically changed due to the road failure, population evacuation, or rescue efforts. Due to the incompleteness of information, drivers may underreact to the disaster, resulting in safety risks, or overreact, leading to exacerbated congestions. Both scenarios may cause further disruptions or cascading failure. With the help of V2I/V2V technology, a smart network guidance, e.g., speed regulation, can be disseminated to each local road segment which helps smooth the traffic under such extreme scenarios.

Why is this a priority and what are the benefits for the State/County/City? :

This research will provide a framework to evaluate the benefit of the future deployed V2I/V2V, especially under the disaster scenario (e.g., the reduction of population threatened by disasters). In addition, the proposed framework can also be widely generalized to evaluate the enhancement of daily operation capabilities of the agency.
