This could be worth exploring and we have successfully been using portable signals on static work zones for quite a while, but here are a couple of thoughts to add to the conversation:
- by moving operation, I think that you mean that you set up the signals (placement and timing set) and the work zone is moving within that defined segment of road
- if that's the idea, then the effectiveness of smaller, easier to move portable signals could be evaluated
- adding signals onto a truck could be problematic as drivers have no experience with this type of set up and may be confused by it - there could also be a concern that the signal may not be noticeable when mounted on a truck - so perhaps the signals need to be trailer mounted
