Why is this a priority for the State/County/City? : The time is now to fully implement the responsible utilization of geosynthetics during pavement design and construction. Two national projects, one administered by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) and the second, a Transportation Pooled Fund (TPF) project are will be finishing up shortly. These projects were created to resolve uncertainty, facilitate greater acceptance and quantify the influence of geosynthetics on pavement performance “Quantifying the Influence of Geosynthetics on Pavement Performance” http://apps.trb.org/cmsfeed/TRBNetProjectDisplay.asp?ProjectID=2949 and “Relative Operational Performance of Geosynthetics Used as Subgrade Stabilization” http://www.pooledfund.org/Details/Study/479. These projects will produce a methodology for quantifying the influence of geosynthetics on pavement performance for use in pavement design for both flexible and rigid pavements.

Idea Status (moderator):
Develop implementation plan for Feb. 27 TRIG meeting

Geosynthetics are used by highway agencies in unbound base and subgrade layers as a means of enhancing flexible and rigid pavement performance. Mechanistic-empirical pavement design provides a methodology for the analysis and prediction of pavement performance.

Design procedures, construction specifications and monetary price adjustments need to be modified to fully accommodate the utilization of geosynthetics during pavement design and construction.
