The Southern part of our state is in an extreme drought

area. We are experiencing extreme weather and need

to be prepared. If the subbase or soil has dried, and shrinks, asphalt will crack, concrete will have voids. Infrastructure could be affected - such as more dips around culverts, broken pipes.

  1. MnDOT has submitted a proposal to FHWA to conduct a vulnerability assessment in Districts 1 & 6 related to flash flooding. Our climatologists are telling us that we are likely to see simultaneous drought and flood conditions often in neighboring counties or even the same county. This proposal to look at drought effects could be a nice complement to the flash flood vulnerability assessment.

  2. A third part of this could be to look at the impacts that could occur if freeze thaw cycles make significant changes from past history
