3D Underwater Scanning

Underwater Investigation of bridge structures can be very tricky. Usually we use divers and are dependent on their observations. They give us a physical description that can be misinterpreted. Also, if the water is murky visual observations can be difficult. There is equipment that can use lidar to scan structures underwater giving us a precise image. This image can be rotated and used to measure such things as the depth of scour at a bridge foundation. The data can be used to calculate quantities needed for repair to the structure. FHWA is currently studying this type of equipment to use in lieu of underwater divers.
